SAFE news
There will be times when a strong action is necessary to create a spark. On Monday 25th June SAFE helped achieve this when activists from the Coalition to End Factory Farming blockaded the gates of Mainland Poultry, the largest battery hen farm in the country. The activists were protesting against battery cages, including the colony battery cage system Mainland is trialling.

Cage eggs were already a topical issue, getting attention in the press thanks to a single blog post on the problems to do with free range and labeling that went viral. The tripod blockade ensured it was the main topic of conversation again- with over 40 media stories, front-page headlines and coverage on Close Up, TV3 and One News.

The exposure of cruelty, education, lobbying and other forms of public outreach will always be SAFE’s key means of effecting change. A great example of this is the petition handover coordinated by the Dunedin SAFE group. Completely volunteer-led, they did an amazing job! Find out more in this month’s bulletin!
