Keeping in the spirit of applauding councils for ethical decision making, last week SAFE applauded the Mayor and councillors of Napier City Council. The council recently passed a motion to close Marineland as an entertainment facility once Kelly, the last remaining captive dolphin, dies.

Marineland’s long history and high level of support from within the Hawke’s Bay community is undeniable. For the Council to decide it was no longer appropriate to approve any further performing dolphins at Marineland was a brave decision, albeit long overdue. For SAFE it spells an end to an arduous campaign that began in the mid-1990s. At the time, four dolphins remained. SAFE staged weekly protests and lobbied the council and the Minister of Conservation to no avail. Even DoC wasn’t prepared to take a stand in the interest of protecting captive marine mammals. SAFE was called ridiculous and spoil sports. Thankfully this has all changed but sadly at the highest cost imaginable - the tragic loss of over 80 dolphins connected in some way to Marineland since 1965.

Now we all wait for the sad, yet imminent death of the last, aging dolphin to finally put an end to the suffering and misery those tiny concrete pools have caused for all these years. While we will not rejoice at the death of Kelly we take comfort knowing her death signals the last ever captive performing dolphin to suffer in New Zealand. I am confident you will agree. Please write to Napier’s Mayor congratulating her on a decision that represents yet another victory for animals in New Zealand.

Write to:
Mayor Barbara Arnott,
Napier City Council,

Napier 4142.

The reduction in numbers, while welcome news, is overshadowed by a huge increase in animals subject to very severe suffering. More ...
