I’m a passionate cook who loves to eat! It’s the perfect combination but it doesn’t suit everyone. I know many who would rather bypass the cooking stage and simply eat. Others attempt one better: they invite me around to cook! I try not to disappoint. I am particularly impressed when aficionado cooks enthusiastically share stories about where they source their ingredients.

This year has seen some of the world’s top celebrity chefs questioning the origins of the ingredients they use. It is no longer as simple as picking up the phone to have ingredients delivered to the culinary temple. Take celebrity chefs Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, Gordon Ramsay and Jamie Oliver for example. They have all recently raised concerns over the systematic abuse and mistreatment of animals reared for food. Like us, they are shocked to learn how animals are reared and have become opponents of cruel factory farming practices. As a result, millions of consumers are learning that they are contributing to the suffering and death of animals and making significant changes to their buying habits.

Next Tuesday (26 Aug) TV One will screen Jamie Oliver’s 90-minute programme about poultry delivered with his customary passion and gusto. While Jamie by no means promotes vegetarianism he does bring the reality of modern farming into the living rooms of people who continue to eat meat. It is a must see!

Dolphins and Whales:
What Makes Them Special?

Many people today have a special feeling for whales and dolphins, and in New Zealand there is a powerful consensus that they should be protected from any harm inflicted by human beings.
