SAFE SUPPORTER BULLETIN
CAMPAIGNS X EVENTS X NEWS X ACTIONS X RESCUES X GIVEAWAYS

Ever been in a crowded theatre or stadium and tried to attract someone’s attention from afar? It’s near impossible unless you enjoy being loud and extroverted or possess champion arm-waving techniques. You could certainly say SAFE is in the extrovert category. We are highly motivated to want to be noticed and there is no denying we have a strong and passionate voice. In a room SAFE easily gets the attention we deserve but at a national level we have to deploy more cunning strategies.

Our arm-waving techniques have recently been deployed in the form of a national advertising campaign and actions around the country. Following last week’s screening of Jamie Oliver’s Jamie’s Fowl Dinners SAFE ran a successful newspaper campaign with adverts appearing in many papers including The Press, The Dominion Post, Sunday Star-Times and Sunday News. We reached over half the nation. The eye-catching advertisements highlighted the appalling state of poultry farming in New Zealand and called for consumer action. SAFE campaign director Hans Kriek appeared on TV One’s Good Morning show and spoke five times on talkback radio. The Oliver programme sparked debate and has the poultry industry trying to diffuse the consumer time-bomb Oliver ignited. We also organised stalls to highlight the plight of battery hens and inserted our flash new leaflet against caged eggs in the New Zealand Geographic magazine. Pet Magazine’s latest issue includes an article and leaflet exposing animal research in New Zealand timed to coincide with a highly successful walk for the animals in Palmerston North. And just recently long-time SAFE supporter and actor Emily Barclay was profiled in the Star-Times’ magazine featuring her work with SAFE.

The New Zealand public is hearing SAFE’s voice loud and clear. You are always welcome to join us. The next few months have equally exciting activities planned including SAFE’s mammoth annual appeal. Please raise your hand to volunteer and be part of this brilliant organisation we have created. We will surely spot you from a mile off (but even better email us just to be sure!!)
