New Zealand has grown up with a love for Dog and his mate, Wal. Since 1976 their traditional best-mate tomfoolery has made us proud to be animal-loving kiwis. Dog is undeniably an adorable character and everybody wants him. Well this week you can try your best to snaffle them both up skylarking on a surfboard, on their way to Bondi apparently. ’Next Stop Bondi’ is an original print kindly donated to SAFE by Murray Ball himself. It is one of 50 prized-works produced by 45 distinguished or upcoming New Zealand artists. Aside from being talented artists, they have a passion for animals and have generously contributed works to help raise funds for SAFE.

SAFE’s Bid For Freedom charity art auction launches this Saturday, hosted by television host Jaquie Brown and opened by Auckland mayor John Banks. It is anticipated that it will be a rewarding event with all of the proceeds being used to campaign against factory farming. The star-studded artist line-up includes a few extraordinary works from different types of artists - namely entertainer Jools Topp of the Topp Twins, and musician Ruban Nielson of the Mint Chicks.

Bid For Freedom is SAFE’s fifth charity auction. While my ability to paint or draw is at best limited to flamboyant stick figures, I do know the art of appreciation which is why I must acknowledge SAFE’s promotions manager, Amanda Sorrenson. Amanda continues to do a sensational job enlisting support from those within the art world who have a desire to aid animals in New Zealand. Amanda says the calibre of the work and level of support this year has been outstanding.

”I am delighted to have the support of so many generous New Zealand artists. They have all been moved by the desire to see an end to the cruelty endured by factory farmed animals,” says Amanda.

SAFE is extremely grateful to all of the contributing artists for their support for SAFE. Now it is time for some serious bidding on some fine work, including the cute sheepdog!

LEMON COCONUT & WHITE CHOCOLATE CUPCAKES
SAFE’s aficionado cook Amanda says these are the best!

In a bowl place:
3 cups flour
2 cups sugar
3/4 cup coconut
1 tsp salt
1 tsp baking soda
Zest of 2-3 lemons (finely grated rind)

Add wet ingredients:
1 cup oil
2 tsp vanilla essence
1 Tbs vinegar
1 cup water
1 cup lemon juice (add water to make up balance) 1/2 cup vegan white choc chips* (optional)

Spoon the mixture evenly into paper cups, set into muffin trays. Bake for approximately 20 minutes at 180 degrees Celsius but watch them. When they are cooling place a white choc button on the top. This will form a little icing circle to decorate and will harden. Makes 24 cupcakes.
