Saturday’s election result came as no surprise. The blues celebrated while the reds bowed down, defeated. The most disappointing colour on the night was green. I feel for those within the core of the Green Party, they must feel gutted. They ran a highly effective, well-spirited campaign - flying true colours all the way - clean, green and genuine. They can certainly return to parliament with their heads held high, flanked with two, possibly three, new eco-MP warriors. Of course the true test is if any of the right wingers will give them the time of day. As for that chameleon Winston, I’m sure he is just as relieved as us that it’s all over. No loss there.

So who else had a bad night? One voter was so shocked at the election results that he called the police! I’m not sure what he was expecting them to do. Arrest all the National voters! Youthline also reported fielding calls from disheartened young voters feeling overwhelmed. Can you blame them, knowing we are going to suffer being blue for three long years?

Saturday’s election did prove one thing. That New Zealand is full of losers - the animals - over 350 million no less! While we may gripe about the state of the economy, inflation, welfare and the failing education system, millions of animals remain in a state of despair and misery, struggling to survive. The animals lost many allies and gained few political friends this week. I know Labour didn’t do enough for animals under their rule, but what governing party ever has? At least Labour had MPs sympathetic to the plight of animals. I am not convinced about National but their attempt to develop a party position on animal welfare was an abysmal effort to impress us animal folk. Nonetheless, the country has voted and we must work with what we have on offer. Hopefully, the right will prove me wrong.
