Your friends impress upon you that you’re special. Really important, they say. It is surely true but ask a stranger on the street to describe you and they are unlikely to be so flattering. They may even ignore you and keep walking. Special? Important? Not to them, so they have no time for you or interest in what you have to say. But no one likes to be ignored.

This was the case for Lisa, a caring individual who recently sent a compassionate request to a web-based photographic company. Her request sought to have a set of disturbing images of extreme animal abuse removed from their site. The request warranted affirmative action but instead Lisa was effectively ignored. Lisa’s case found its way to SAFE and within a few hours of our intervention the company agreed to remove the images. We are spared a few less despicable images of animal abuse on the internet.

It’s easy to ignore a single voice. It’s a little harder to ignore an organisation with such professional clout. It demonstrates the importance of SAFE having a strong supporter base and provides a good reason to consider giving a gift SAFE membership to your friends this Christmas!

Keeping things festive, hundreds of very special SAFE supporters will soon be hitting the streets asking strangers to give generously to the animals (I trust you’re joining us!). While you may expect the odd cold-shoulder response from strangers, people are usually very forthcoming (and giving) when it comes to animals, so when they give, you both have a reason to feel equally important and special.

In less than ten days almost fifty centres around the country will simultaneously have supporters out on the streets collecting donations to help animals in New Zealand. While we have over 750 collectors signed up so far we are still falling short of the estimated 1200 collectors needed nationwide. There is still time to register and it’s simple! Besides, we need you! Click here

ANIMAL CRUELTY ON THE INTERNET
SAFE was approached last week to help convince an online photo database site to remove a collection of images involving a young cat being burnt alive. No sooner had SAFE director Anthony Terry made a complaint to Photobucket.com had they agreed to remove the offending images. So why did they refuse the first time? More ...

Wishful children seeking a place on Santa’s knee this Christmas will be joined by battery hens, pregnant sows and even the occasional overworked reindeer. The furry, costume-clad menagerie is asking Santa to grant their real animal friends a more compassionate life in New Zealand. More ...

SAFE’S LITTLE HELPERS!
Many hands make light work! In recent weeks SAFE has asked for volunteers to help with many tasks related to the appeal. The SAFE team reports dozens of people have come forward offering to put up posters, call local members, circulate flyers and help coordinate in their area. SAFE wishes to extend huge thanks to all of SAFE’s fabulous little helpers.

PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHERS WANTED
SAFE seeks professional photographers willing to donate an hour or so to photograph collectors in action on the streets around the country, on either the 19th or 20th of December. The photographs will be used in internal and external publications during the following year. If you’re able to assist, please email anthony@safe.org.nz.

SAFE WISHES
The SAFE team are a little crazy at the moment ensuring all of the preparations are made for the SAFE appeal. In the spirit of fun, festivity and lunacy SAFE director Anthony Terry posed some questions to the team about goals, dreams and wishful thinking. More ...
