director’s message
Welcome to 2009. I trust your New Year celebrations were memorable and joyful. Except for the statutory holidays both SAFE offices remained open. Yeah, yeah. Little holiday humbugs we are but I prefer to think we are just a diligent and dedicated bunch! I am delighted however that another successful annual appeal has been achieved and exciting new things are emerging for the year (such as this new look bulletin!). If you helped with the appeal, thank you. Many hands pitched in to successfully raise nearly $290,000, which is an awesome effort given we’re in a recession. The financial crisis has certainly taken its toll across the globe and SAFE is not immune to it either, but am I overly worried?

SCHOOL DEFENDS PIGS
Epsom Girls Grammar School (EGGS) students were so outraged when they heard about the plight of factory farmed pigs that they decided to hold a three-day awareness campaign at their school called Uncaged.

VEGAN-POWERED TRIATHLON!
Legendary international vegan athlete Carl Lewis has said “Most athletes have the worst diet in the world, and they compete in spite of it.” Another top athlete Brendan Brazier, a professional tri-athlete and vegan for six years, believes that “a vegan diet is optimal for high performance athletes.” For the past four years vegan triathletes from around New Zealand have been battling it out, while of course having fun. Next month they will do it all again.
