in the media
Intense media attention has highlighted many animal issues in recent weeks. Radio show hosts and talkback callers have been hotly debating the ethics of imported cat and dog fur, live sheep exports and, most recently, cruel glue traps. Internet opinion polls asked if New Zealand should ban cat and dog fur imports and live sheep exports for slaughter. Unsurprisingly, the consensus was in favour of banning both. SAFE has appeared on radio, television and in newspapers opposing these issues but also strongly objecting to elephant imports by the Auckland Zoo and the plight of Jumbo, the circus elephant.

PIGS STEP UP
Last month the famous annual tower race once again took place at the University of Canterbury. It featured a run around the library, a sprint up 11 flights of stairs and a pig!

LIVE SHEEP EXPORTS
SAFE quickly responded to calls by the Minister of Agriculture for New Zealand to resume live sheep exports to the Middle East. SAFE campaign director Hans Kriek condemned the surprise announcement and said it would seriously damage New Zealand’s international reputation, not to mention set back animal welfare by a decade.

CAT AND DOG FUR BAN
Following a successful campaign launch by SAFE and other animal advocacy groups, SAFE has announced tests will be done on at least six fur samples from soft toys imported from China.

CRUEL GLUE TRAPS
SAFE has spoken out against what has been described as one of the worst forms of animal cruelty. Cruel glue mouse traps are being sold in $2 shops around the country and SAFE is calling on people to stop buying and using these cruel traps.
