CHRISTCHURCH Jill's Film 7pm, Thursday, 18th September at SAFE, level 1, 145 Armagh Street, Christchurch (40 mins) The truly inspirational film about the life and untimely death of animal rights activist Jill Phipps. Jill was killed at the age of 31 on February 1st in 1995 at an anti-veal protest in Great Britain. Jill (a mother of one) died under a lorry carrying veal calves for export from Coventry Airport. Jill's Film is the result of months of hard work by John Curtin who wanted to keep alive the memory of Jill Phipps. With the help of Jill's family, Mr Curtin found tapes of her as a little girl, filmed with her parents' cine-camera. He also trawled through news footage to find Jill on camera at protests, as well as footage after her death and of her funeral at Coventry Cathedral. John said: "It was a very, very emotional experience putting it together. It's a tragic story, very sad, but it's also inspirational and at the end of the day I didn't want Jill to be forgotten. She was beautiful, caring and stood up for what she believed in." Mr Curtin's moving tribute, inspired by the 10th anniversary of her death, tells her story from childhood. It features footage of Jill as a little girl and young woman and interviews with her mother Nancy at the time of her death. All welcome. Bring friends and family (and some vegan food to share if you like!). |
