No sooner had Marina Strbac joined SAFE’s Facebook page was she encouraging her friends to do the same. “I just joined the group on Facebook and invited all my friends to join, so fingers crossed that they do,” says Marina. SAFE’s page doubled within a week! Marina has some advice for helping the Facebook network grow.

CIRCUS DEMO IN AUCKLAND
Despite driving rain SAFE was out in force last weekend demonstrating outside the Loritz Circus in Mangere on behalf of Jumbo, the circus elephant. SAFE campaigners from Auckland were undeterred from highlighting the plight of Jumbo to passing motorists and those attending the circus.

BEAGLE RESEARCH IN NEW ZEALAND
After lodging a complaint to the Minister of Agriculture, Jim Anderton, in September 2007 about the unnecessary use of animals in research SAFE has finally received a response. SAFE made the complaint following comments by animal researcher Alan Goldenthal who runs New Zealand's leading companion animal breeding and research facility. Goldenthal publicly admitted that numerous New Zealand research protocols were either redundant, complementary, or sequential to studies being performed elsewhere. He seriously questioned the effectiveness of New Zealand's Animal Ethics Committees (AECs).

BUDDING ANIMAL ADVOCATES
In the midst of the storm that lashed Canterbury last week a small but determined group of budding animal advocates attended a presentation on ‘Effective Animal Advocacy.' SAFE's education officer, Nichola Kriek, presented a talk themed around understanding the basics of animal rights philosophy, the importance of consistency and how animal advocacy can become part of your everyday life.

SAFE GETS FLEECED!
SAFE received the ‘warm fuzzies’ from Victoria University students Jon, Laura and Stacey, who organised the second annual Polar Fleece Day at The San Francisco Bathhouse in Wellington last month. SAFE was the nominated recipient of the proceeds of this year’s annual dress-up-in-polar-fleece fundraising event, which raised over $500.

REPORT REVEALS INCREASED SUFFERING
The National Animal Ethics Advisory Committee (NAEAC) has released its latest annual report on animal experimentation in New Zealand. The 2007 report reveals that 246,667 animals were used in experiments, down from 318,489 the previous year. The reduction in numbers, while welcome news, is overshadowed by a huge increase in animals subject to very severe suffering.
