In the midst of the storm that lashed Canterbury last week a small but determined group of budding animal advocates attended a presentation on ‘Effective Animal Advocacy.' SAFE's education officer, Nichola Kriek, presented a talk themed around understanding the basics of animal rights philosophy, the importance of consistency and how animal advocacy can become part of your everyday life. "Many people don't realise that animal advocacy is something that you can take part in even when you are doing something as mundane as supermarket shopping," Nichola explained. "As a consumer you are a powerful voice for animals. Congratulate those who provide cruelty-free options and let them know when you want alternatives to animal products." Nichola stressed that the best way to advocate for animals is to lead by example. "Leading a caring and cruelty free lifestyle is a great way to show others how easy it can be to make compassionate choices." At the end of the talk the group ventured back out into the storm. They may not have been well equipped for the weather - but they were well armed with new knowledge and motivated to make a difference for animals.
