The Dutch Partij voor Dieren (Party for the Animals) made worldwide news three years ago, by becoming the first political party for animals in the world to reach Parliament. They're back!
Many predicted the party wouldn't last a term, yet recent elections saw both MP's return, thereby firmly establishing this party as a force to be reckoned with. Party for the Animals soon became known as the most active party, asking more questions and submitting more proposals than any other party. "Animal issues are now much more at the forefront of the political agenda in the Netherlands," says SAFE campaign director Hans Kriek, who met up with one of the Dutch MPs in 2007. "Almost every other political party now has an animal welfare policy or improved existing ones." The success of the Party for the Animals has inspired other countries to look at adopting similar political parties.
