ETHICS AND GOOD TASTE IN ACTION |
Ethics and good taste were in alignment in Auckland’s SAFE office last week. Three successful women shared tips on how to run a vegan business and spoke of their personal experiences and the reasons they considered doing such a crazy thing. Caro Warburton, shop manager of SAFE’s Cruelty Free shop introduced the speakers, talked about the successful year the shop is having, and unveiled the new online shop. Alice Leonard talked about how she was inspired to start Angel Foods after meeting her present partner, 30-year vegan Billy. She then delved into the challenges of inventing the perfect vegan marshmallow and her plans for world domination of this niche market. Sam Moorhead inspired everyone by describing the surprising journey she is on to share her knowledge of healthy food, and her personal Christian perspective. This has led her to take over a well-known greasy spoon on State Highway 2 and turn it into an oasis of healthy living with lentil pies, no coffee or sugar and dairy free ice cream. By the time it came to testing the food, the audience was ready! The evening was part of the ‘Talking of Animals’ series of public forums on issues related to animals and SAFE’s work. These are not just for the converted, but are open to everyone and everyone is welcome to attend. The next talk is on Tuesday, the 2nd of September, with special guest Yolanda Soryl who will talk about ‘Sustainable Activism’ – how to stay in the animal rights movement for the long haul, avoid burn out and still have a life. 03 August 2008
