SCIENTISTS SPELL AN OCEAN WITHOUT FISH

Why were movie-goers stunned to be offered free fish-friendly samples by SAFE volunteers after watching the movie End of the Line?

SAFE campaigners waited outside an Auckland cinema for movie-goers to offer a simple, yet tasty solution to the film's powerful message about the world's fishing industry. End of the Line is a provocative new film that screened at the Documentary Film Festival in Auckland earlier this month. The film exposes the devastating effect that overfishing is having on global fish stock populations.

flyerflyer backThe documentary examines the human impact on marine life, such as the imminent extinction of blue fin tuna, the disturbance to the natural food chain resulting in the huge overpopulation of jellyfish, how factory fish farms were unsustainable and the profound implications of a future without fish in the ocean.

"The film is very successful at conveying to the audience the seriousness of the situation and that eating fish is having dire consequences for the ocean's marine life," says SAFE campaign officer Eliot Pryor.

Movie-goers were invited to try some fish-friendly vegetarian crumbed alternatives and also handed a flyer with a list of places to buy them.

"We received so many positive responses and questions once people realised the fish we were offering was not actually fish, but a fish-friendly alternative."

SAFE thanks Blissful foods for donating the vegetarian fish samples.
