The power of social media - and you as a consumer!
SAFE was delighted that 1-Day, a daily deal website, agreed to remove a tiny novelty ‘USB desktop' fish tank from sale after a flood of complaints to their Facebook page and e-mail from SAFE supporters.
SAFE was alerted to the tanks by several concerned supporters who expressed disgust at the idea that fish could be kept in such an inadequate space alongside a flashing musical desk clock and pen tidy.
"It is wrong to treat fish like a novelty item, and the tank was so small it was less than the size of a postcard! Fish require far more space than that and any animal cruelly condemned to live in such a device would soon die," says SAFE campaign manager Mandy Carter.
Fortunately, after only an hour and a half of a barrage of complaints from SAFE Facebook supporters, 1-Day bowed to pressure and agreed to remove the small tanks from sale, apologising for the upset it had caused.
"This just goes to show that although you may sometimes feel powerless to stop animal cruelty, you can often make a difference to animals just by writing a quick message outlining your concerns. Companies listen to their customers! Never be afraid to make your voice heard," says Mandy.
