Demand an independent inquiry into greyhound racing
Animals suffer and die in the New Zealand greyhound racing industry. Dogs are injured on the track and killed, as their injuries will prevent them from racing again. An even larger number of healthy greyhounds are killed simply because they do not run fast enough, and therefore do not provide a financial return.
In 2015, investigations by Animals Australia and Animal Liberation QLD exposed dozens of greyhound trainers across NSW, Victoria and Queensland using ‘live baiting’ to train their dogs. Live baiting in Australia involves piglets and rabbits being used as lures to be chased and ripped apart by the dogs. Only an in-depth independent inquiry will show whether the same live baiting practices are happening in the New Zealand greyhound racing industry.
Greyhound racing is already banned in forty US states, where commercial dog racing is illegal and a ban in the ACT in Australia comes into force from May 2018. New Zealand is falling behind and our Government needs to take action. The industry operates without adequate supervision. An independent inquiry into the greyhound industry here in New Zealand must be launched.
- Please send an urgent message to Rt Hon Winston Peters, Minister for Racing, calling on him to launch an independent inquiry into the greyhound racing industry.
