Farewell Sacha, hello Laura!
I'm Laura the new National volunteer coordinatorfor SAFE. SAFE's previous National volunteer coordinator, Sacha Dowell, left in May after seven years of working for SAFE. Sacha did an awesome job and is much missed by the SAFE staff and volunteers so I have some big shoes to fill!
I arrived from England on holiday eight years ago and have never quite got around to going home. During my time in New Zealand I have managed three backpacker hostels and worked as a vet nurse. (I can tell you, animals are far easier to deal with than backpackers!)
From as far back as I can remember I have been sensitive to the needs of animals. So when my primary school teacher made the school watch a gruesome animal rights video (controversial at the time!) I was shocked and upset and I announced to my parents that night that I was going vegetarian, much to their horror! Watching that footage set me on course for life!
Like a lot of people, I heard about SAFE when the pig story was aired on the Sunday programme in 2009. I thought, who are these awesome people? One look at the website and I was excited about getting involved.
I feel very privileged to be working for SAFE and getting the opportunity to help animals in New Zealand. So far I'm blown away by the warmth of the SAFE staff. What a gorgeous group of caring and compassionate people! I have been made to feel incredibly welcome and I look forward meeting the rest of the team and getting truly stuck in to the job.
Thanks for having me!
