David ‘DC’ Cordtz QnA
Personal trainer and super athlete David ‘DC’ Cordtz, 38, started up Street Workout calisthenics to help people get fit for free. The younger brother of former Warrior Ruben Wiki, he represents New Zealand at international street workout contests. David became a vegan early in 2014, and says it has increased his strength, muscle, focus and energy and he has not been sick once since!
What’s the greatest thing about being Veg?
Saving lives, the animals and the planet.
How did you make the changes?
I started the change by eliminating all dairy and animal products from my diet.
What was the biggest challenge for you and how did you overcome it?
Biggest challenge for me was the social aspect, of knowing what to eat and preparing well, so I was never with non-vegans, hungry all the time.
How do you stay on track?
Research on the internet, ask other vegans, and meal preparation.
Is there a special animal that inspires you?
The gorilla inspires me, the way it moves and how strong it is.
Are your family and friends Veg too?
Some friends are vegans.
When people ask you why you ‘went vegetarian/vegan’ what’s your usual response?
After watching animal cruelty videos and reading about it and learning about all the health risks for myself and others…. that's why.
How do you respond to criticism about being vegetarian/vegan?
I embrace it as it’s a good chance to educate people.
Is there a vegan ‘myth’ that makes you laugh?
Vegans don't get enough protein?
What’s your favourite food?
A good dairy-free banana cake.
What’s your favourite restaurant?
Wise Cicada and Little Bird.
Do you have a favourite recipe that you can share with us?
Favourite Dinner Recipe: Cauliflower, kale and potato. Alter the recipe based on the quantity you want to eat. Have with a leafy green salad.
What’s your favourite snack?
Banana smoothie with mango and greens (try and get kale or silver beet). Aim for 8 bananas as a minimum.
What vegan product could you not live without?
One vegan product I couldn't live without would be kumara sweet potatoes.
What do you do for fun?
For fun I go take the kids to the park do Street Workout.
What do you do for fitness?
Calisthenics, ZUU, Ankorr, Functional Training.
What is the funniest thing someone has ever said to you about being Veg?
Where do get your protein from?
What’s the one thing you wish people knew about being vegetarian/vegan?
People need to know the benefits of being vegan – saving their lives and others and animals and the planet.
What advice would you give to someone who is considering becoming vegetarian/vegan?
Go vegan. There are so many benefits when taking on a vegan diet for health and fitness.
