Service Foods receives giant Easter card from caring Kiwis

April 17th, 2019

This Easter, SAFE delivered a giant Easter card to Service Foods’ Auckland office. Inside the card were messages and signatures from caring Kiwis asking Service Foods to make its cage-free egg policy official.

Across New Zealand, millions of hens spend their entire lives confined within cages. The space allocated to an individual hen is about the size of an iPad. She spends her entire life with her feet pressed against a hard wire floor, with barely enough room to stretch her wings

SAFE Head of Campaigns Marianne Macdonald says these Easter messages reflect how deeply people care about this serious animal welfare issue.

In October of 2018 Service Foods Director, Nikul Balar, revealed to SAFE that he was happy to commit to Service Foods sourcing only cage-free shell eggs by 2027. This news was well received and to make it official, SAFE asked Service Foods to produce a formal cage-free policy to confirm its position. Service Foods has repeatedly avoided doing so and has since gone silent on the subject.

“No-one wants to be placed under scrutiny for supporting animal cruelty. People want to see change, and it is great to see Service Foods has taken a step in the right direction by recognising the issue, but now it’s time for Service Foods to make its policy official,” says Ms Macdonald. “It is never too late to go cage-free.”

Service Foods is a New Zealand owned and operated food service company. A cage-free policy would put the company on the same level as its biggest competitor, Bidfood NZ, which recently announced it would become cage-free by 2024.
