Aotearoa is outsourcing animal cruelty

Right now Aotearoa is importing cruel products from overseas – from farming systems that have been banned here! SAFE is backing a campaign to demand that animal products from cruel and illegal farming systems, like battery cages and sow stalls, be prohibited from entering New Zealand.

We have fought hard to ensure a ban on some of the worst practices in factory farms across Aotearoa. We expect our animal welfare laws to be upheld across the board, including imports.

Cruel imports undermine progress - and cause suffering overseas

Together we secured a ban on some of the worst cruelty to farmed animals in Aotearoa. Our campaigns have led to bans on battery cages and sow stalls. We even went to the High Court and used our voice to stand up for mother pigs, leading to the Court ruling that farrowing crates and mating stalls were illegal.

While we continue the fight against cruelty happening right here in Aotearoa, we must ensure that our hard-fought victories for animals are not undermined - nor contribute to suffering overseas. Right now, there are pigs kept in cruel sow stalls in countries like Canada for the New Zealand market. We banned these practices because they are unacceptable, and that means we shouldn’t allow overseas products from those same practices to be sold here.

Massive support for change

Over 80% of New Zealanders agree that imported products from outside New Zealand should respect the same animal welfare standards as those applied in New Zealand.

In fact, many people already think that this is the case. Our current laws are undermining Kiwis expectations of animal welfare and these imported products must be banned.
