End live export by air

On April 30th, 2023, New Zealand enacted a world-leading ban on live animal export by sea.

What many people are unaware of, however, is live export by air will continue in New Zealand.

Unfortunately, most of these animals are destined for countries with no animal protection laws, which means that once they arrive at their destination, they are often killed by methods deemed too cruel to be legal in New Zealand.

The nation overwhelmingly supported the ban on exporting live animals by sea due to the horrors of the journey and the dangers of the destination.

New Zealand claims to maintain world-class standards of animal welfare. If we are to stand behind this claim, we cannot continue to outsource cruelty – no matter the vessel.

Help us tell the Government it is time for all forms of live export to end.

Take action

Write to Rt Hon Prime Minister Christopher Luxon, Minister of Agriculture Hon Todd McClay, and Associate Minister of Agriculture (Animal Welfare) Hon Andrew Hoggard and urge them to end live export by air.

I was delighted to see the previous Government take animal welfare seriously by banning live export by sea. However, I have serious concerns for the animals who continue to be exported by air.

Unfortunately, live export by air carries many of the same risks and animal welfare concerns as live export by sea.

Most animals exported from New Zealand end up in countries with lower animal welfare standards and are likely to spend their lives in intensive farms. They will eventually be slaughtered, usually through methods that are not legal in New Zealand.

In 2019, an ABC News exposé found hundreds of New Zealand and Australian cows sick and dying on Sri Lankan farms. It was revealed that the lives of animals exported from New Zealand involve high levels of suffering.

My concern is that by continuing to allow live export, the New Zealand Government is putting animals’ lives and New Zealand’s reputation at risk. For this reason, I am advocating for an immediate, complete and permanent ban on the live export of all animals.
