Original Foods Baking Co. announces plans to ditch cage-eggs

June 18th, 2019

Original Foods Baking Co. is baking the world a better place for hens by ditching cage eggs.

One of New Zealand’s most established wholesale bakeries, Original Foods Baking Co. (Original Foods), has announced it will be phasing out cage egg ingredients from its entire range of baked goods by 2027. This is huge news!

Not sure who Original Foods is? You can find their products in leading supermarket outlets, café cabinets and on some restaurants’ dessert menus. The wholesale bakery also supplies sweet treats to catering companies, leading foodservice distributors, as well as major airlines. If you have travelled with Air New Zealand, Jetstar or Singapore Airlines, you may have spotted an Original Foods muffin or slice on the menu.

SAFE’s Corporate Campaigns Coordinator Jessica Chambers says she is thrilled with Original Foods’ cage-free policy.

“Original Foods’ cage-free policy confirms the fact that a new standard has been set within the foodservice industry.” She says, “It’s time for competing food manufacture brands to move forward and release cage-free commitments of their own.”

This policy is the latest addition to the list of leading foodservice companies going cage-free in NZ. Bidfood New Zealand and Service Foods, (both national distributors of Original Foods products), released cage-free commitments earlier this year.
