Animal farming is the leading cause of deforestation around the world. Over 50% of New Zealand’s landmass has been cleared to farm animals. Many areas are intensively farmed, resulting in significant pollution of our fresh waterways.
Dairy production demands huge amounts of water, and the effluent produced by over six million dairy cows across the country is polluting our soil, aquifers and waterways. This has led to an increase in demand for non-dairy options, as more Kiwis seek to help create a cleaner environment.
The majority of New Zealand’s greenhouse gas emissions is from animal farming, so by cutting out meat and dairy, you’re cutting out the foods that emit the largest quantities of environmentally damaging emissions.
Oceans are no longer a sanctuary for fish and other sea life. Only 3% of marine areas remain free from human pressure. Industrial fishing takes place in more than half the world’s oceans, and one-third of fish populations are overexploited. By making the move to plant-based options, we’re giving these habitats and their inhabitants a chance to survive.
