Take a stand against fish factory farming

Fishes are sentient beings, meaning they have the capacity to experience fear, pain, distress, and a sense of well-being. New Zealand’s own Animal Welfare Act recognises fishes as sentient beings, however fishes are exploited in many ways and their welfare often overlooked.

The issues impacting farmed fishes include:

• Overcrowding
• Poor water quality
• Quick spread of parasites and disease
• Skin lesions
• Skeletal deformities
• Heat stress
• Inability to escape predators
• Stress and depression
• High mortality rates

Tēnā koutou Prime Minister, Minister Hoggard, and Minister Jones, I am writing to express my concern at the level of suffering experienced by farmed fishes in Aotearoa New Zealand. Fishes are sentient beings and are recognised as such within the Animal Welfare Act 1999, however farmed fishes are kept in conditions that directly breach their legal rights under the Act. Research demonstrates that fishes have the ability to feel pain and experience positive and negative emotional states. They should therefore receive the same protection and welfare considerations as land animals. The issues impacting farmed fishes include; overcrowding, poor water quality, skin lesions, skeletal deformities, the quick spread of parasites and disease, thermal stress, and high mortality rates. For example, New Zealand King Salmon accepts a staggering 25% mortality rate as standard on their farms, yet repeatedly reports higher than anticipated summer mortality rates. If this were cows, sheep, or pigs, investigations would be undertaken. We are calling on you to initiate a ban on fish factory farming.
