Victory for hens! Marriott Hotels to go cage-free.
December 6th, 2018We are a huge step closer to seeing a world where hens don’t suffer in cages.
After years of dodging the subject, Marriott International has finally released a public statement announcing a new policy to phase out cage eggs in all their hotels globally.
Within 48 hours of the campaign kicking off, Marriott leadership invited Open Wing Alliance (OWA) member and Vice President of Policy & Strategy for The Humane League, Aaron Ross, to its headquarters to discuss the release of a new cage-free policy.
While its new policy does not address Marriott’s failure to follow through with its 2015 pledge, it is still a commitment – a commitment that will change the lives of thousands of hens in cages.
The OWA and its many members will likely be keeping a close eye on Marriott to ensure it doesn’t repeat its previous failure to keep its promises!
This monumental global campaign should also set an example to others who have made cage-free commitments – keep your promises, because animal protection organisations around the world will be there to make sure you follow through.
This decisive victory should give other hotel companies the push they need to move away from cage eggs as well. SAFE will be ensuring that New Zealand businesses who have pledged to go cage-free will be honouring those promises in the coming months.
The bar has been set for all New Zealand businesses – people will not accept anything less than 100% cage-free eggs!
