Bidfood New Zealand goes cage-free!

March 4th, 2019

The country’s leading foodservice company is turning its back on cage eggs.

SAFE is delighted to announce that after months of dialogue, the country’s leading food service company, Bidfood NZ, has produced a 2024 cage-free policy for all shell eggs.

While Bidfood may not be a household name, it’s almost guaranteed that on any given day you can spot a Bidfood truck on the road delivering goods and produce to local businesses. With over 15,000 customers nationwide, Bidfood is the largest supplier of eggs within the foodservice industry and the second largest national supplier of eggs after supermarkets. So this

announcement is great news for hens!

This cage-free commitment epitomizes how rapidly New Zealand’s egg industry is changing and responding to
people making animal welfare a priority when they shop. Bidfood’s announcement adds yet another voice to a growing chorus of companies saying no to cage cruelty. With the food sectors major purchasers and suppliers now turning away from cage eggs, the NZ egg farming industry needs to face the fact that cage eggs will soon be a thing of the past

Bidfood’s cage-free policy sets a new standard for the foodservice industry, and now is the time for competing companieto produce cage-free policies of their own. We’ve already initiated meaningful discussion with other foodservice businesses and look forward to securing more wins for hens in the near future.
