On the 11th and 12th of July, NZALA and SAFE took the ultimate step to defend the rights of animals. Together, with your help, we challenged the Government and New Zealand Rodeo Cowboys Association in the High Court. We made the legal case that rodeo violates the Animal Welfare Act 1999 and is unlawful.
A legal challenge against the Government is no small task and if we are not successful the financial penalty could be more than $150,000. As one of the only voices for animals, we cannot let possible costs stand in the way of justice.
Legal proceedings are expensive, but we believe, and I'm sure you do too, that a life free from suffering for the horses, calves and bulls abused in rodeo each year is well worth the expense.
