Horses no longer able to race fast enough to be profitable face uncertain futures. Some may be retired as riding, pleasure or breeding horses. But many are loaded onto trucks, and transported very long distances, to an extremely limited number of abattoirs that process horses. The main abattoir used is Clover Meats in Gore, near the southern end of the South Island. After being killed, these horses are processed into the pet food chain or exported for human consumption to countries such as Russia, Belgium, the Netherlands or Switzerland.
