To end the exploitation of animals

SAFE’s vision is a world where animal rights are valued. We work to achieve that vision through our mission to end the exploitation of animals.

That future isn’t far away. With the help of our supporters, every day we are making massive wins for thousands of animals, and each step forward brings us closer to an Aotearoa where all animals matter.

Sign our petition calling for a Commissioner for Animals

Animals need an independent Commissioner to represent their voices and uphold their legal rights under the Animal Welfare Act 1999. There are Government bodies to represent vulnerable members of our community, including children and the environment. Animals are not represented in Parliament.

Animals in Aotearoa

Support our current campaigns to help animals

The scale of suffering faced by animals in New Zealand, particularly farmed animals, is immense - but we are driving positive change at an immense scale too. Stand with us as we demand change for animals in Aotearoa.

Protect the ban on Live Export

National and Act are seeking to reverse the ban on live animal exports, posing a significant risk to animal welfare. You can make a difference by showing Christopher Luxon (National Party Leader) and David Seymour (ACT Party leader) that there is significant support in the general New Zealand community for ending the live export of animals.

Take urgent action for Greyhounds

The Government has delayed its decision on the future of greyhound racing in Aotearoa until after the election. Hundreds of dogs will continue to suffer while our leaders kick the can down the road.Enough is enough; urge Prime Minister Chris Hipkins, Racing Minister Kieran McAnulty and Associate Agriculture Minister (Animal Welfare) Jo Luxton to take decisive action and ban greyhound racing once and for all.

Ban factory farming of fishes

Fishes are recognised as sentient in New Zealand law, yet there is currently no code of welfare for farmed fishes. The National Animal Welfare Advisory Committee (NAWAC) has had a code of welfare for farmed fishes on its to-do list for seven years.

Putting animals first for over 80 years

You’ll find us everywhere – from farms to the Beehive, from the High Court to the classroom, from television news to social media – working to ensure the concerns of animals are the concerns of the nation.

Foetal Bovine Serum: Your Questions Answered

Behind slaughterhouse doors, mother cows are being killed during pregnancy with the blood from their unborn calves drained to produce foetal bovine serum (FBS). What’s Wrong with Rodeo in NZ?

I filmed my first rodeo, solo, in 2013. These events were held on beautiful sunny days, with country music playing, relaxed crowds and announcers cracking jokes. I sat up on the bank while kids ran about, hot chips were eaten and people chatted and laughed. Stop right there, and this...

The simple matter of the law: pig welfare and farrowing crates

A potential end to the use of farrowing crates on pig farms has drawn battle lines between farmers and animal advocates. SAFE Chief Executive Debra Ashton explains why the legal and social license to confine pigs in farrowing crates has expired. Our country’s leaders love to talk about animal welfare....
