People’s Choice: Town Tonic take Veganuary
February 23rd, 2018SAFE is thrilled to announce Town Tonic as the winner of our People’s Choice Award for Best Dish. Their “vegan pumpkin pie, glass, pistachio, chocolate, rosemary strudel” stood out among so many delectable, drool-worthy dishes.
Owner and Executive Chef Jamie Bennett, who founded the Christchurch farmers’ market has committed to having exceptional vegan eats on his menu – offering an Honest Menu alongside his conventional one. He prides himself on coming up with innovative dishes that are constantly tweaked and made from fresh produce, entirely sourced from local growers.
Town Tonic was just one of many of the celebrated restaurants from across the country to get involved in the Veganuary campaign by offering amazing vegan options. Atticus Finch in Rotorua and East St in Nelson also deserve honourable mentions for their delicious looking entries.
Hundreds of Kiwis joined Miriama Smith by giving vegan a try this January by taking our Challenge. Miriama, a Kiwi film and television actress, says she’s enjoyed exploring veganism and is really interested in making a better lifestyle choice for our environment. “I’ve enjoyed meal planning and alternatives, especially coconut yoghurts and ice cream.” With heaps of dairy-free options in New Zealand, it’s never been easier to stick to a vegan diet.
A worldwide movement, Veganuary has been inspiring plant-based eating everywhere. All around the globe and right here in New Zealand, people are recognising that the simple choice of what they put on their plate makes a big difference and they are putting their values into action.
Eating vegan isn’t just a great choice for January. You can make a difference all year round by keeping animals off your plate. Not only is it better for animals, but it also reduces greenhouse gas emissions and pollution from animal agriculture, and it can even improve our health.
