Turkeys & Ducks

Many people now know about the suffering of caged hens and pigs in factory farms, but did you know turkeys and ducks are also intensively reared?

"Because the heart beats under a covering of hair, of fur, feathers, or wings, it is, for that reason, to be of no account?" Jean Paul Richter.

Uncover the Facts

The Unnatural Lives of Turkeys

In New Zealand turkey is not as popular as other meats like chicken, but still the demand is such that around 375,000 birds are factory farmed ever year.

Most turkeys are kept in similar conditions as chickens intensively reared for their meat, and are unable to express natural behaviours such as flying, nesting, roosting in trees, or to live in social groups.

Confinement of Ducks

Many New Zealanders are aware of, and are opposed to, the suffering caused by shooting of ducks for ‘sport'. But less well-known is the factory farming of ducks, an industry expected to grow as demand for duck meat increases.
