Night ‘n Day supports New Zealand’s cage-free commitment

August 28th, 2018

SAFE is congratulating the nationwide food store chain Night ‘n Day, for embracing a cage-free future. After discussions with SAFE, the franchise has announced its 58 stores will move to sell only cage-free whole eggs by 2025.

Night n’ Day unveiled the change yesterday, in response to customer enquiries.  In posts to its Facebook page, the company said it was “happy to announce that we will be cage-egg free by 2025, hopefully a lot sooner. This is one basket we’re happy to put all our eggs in!”  The shift was prompted by caring Kiwis asking what the brands plans were.

Earlier this year, competing convenience grocery outlets On The Spot and BP adopted cage-free policies. All Progressive and Foodstuffs banners also have timelines for going cage-free, uniting all New Zealand supermarket chains together against the cruelty of cage-eggs. By 2027, there will be no cage eggs left on any supermarket shelves.

“We’re looking at the end of an antiquated industry; caging hens is archaic and outdated. Public acceptance has ended on this shameful treatment of hens. As so many brands are choosing to move towards being cage-free, it’s now a matter of who is left behind supporting this cruelty,” says Jennifer Dutton, SAFE’s Corporate Campaigner.

The worldwide campaign to free hens from cages is part of a global revolution by animal advocacy groups, including members of the Open Wing Alliance, of which SAFE is a partner organisation.
